Pack to the Future: Exploring Modern Packaging Trends for a Sustainable Future

On May 19, 2023, Dr. Priyanuch Seechola, a researcher at the Institute of Agricultural Product and Agro-Industry Development at Kasetsart University, participated in the discussion activity “Pack to the Future: Sustainable Packaging for the Future” organized by the Thailand Creative & Design Center (TCDC) under the Creative Economy Agency (Public Organization). The event was attended by entrepreneurs and academics from various organizations who gathered to discuss environmental issues. One of the critical factors contributing to severe environmental problems is the use of non-biodegradable packaging, such as plastic and foam. The event also invited representatives from the creative materials industry to share stories about “eco-friendly packaging” aimed at promoting sustainability for future generations.

Dr. Priyanuch Seechola spoke on the topic “Enhancing Knowledge for the Community by the Institute of Agricultural Product and Agro-Industry Development.” In Thailand, there is a significant amount of agricultural waste, such as rice straw, sugarcane bagasse, bamboo, hemp, water hyacinth, and more, that farmers and locals often burn. These materials, however, can be repurposed to add value and benefits through creative thinking and research-based knowledge. Dr. Priyanuch and the Institute aim to drive the Thai government’s BCG Model policy and the concept of sustainable development within organizations (ESG). “Our institute does not refer to waste as ‘waste,’ but as ‘agricultural by-products’ that can be added value and repurposed. This concept needs to be communicated to the community to be appreciated,” Dr. Priyanuch explained. The institute is making efforts to build relationships with local communities by disseminating their knowledge to community leaders, who can then pass it on to locals and future generations. This helps the community see the benefits of transforming agricultural residues into packaging that can be further developed, thereby using knowledge to sustainably give back to the community.
