Eco-Friendly Cat Litter from Cassava Waste: A Sustainable Solution

Eco-Friendly Cat Litter from Cassava Waste: A Sustainable Solution

This research project focuses on developing cat litter from cassava residue, a by-product of Thailand’s tapioca starch industry. Typically, 50-60% of cassava processing results in residue containing 10-15% protein and starch. This waste material, often discarded, has significant potential for developing biodegradable cat litter, providing an eco-friendly alternative to traditional products.

The research team has innovated a process to transform cassava residue into usable cat litter. The process involves separating proteins to reduce odor and stickiness, drying the remaining material, and compressing it into compact litter forms. The resulting product is not only environmentally friendly but also reduces industrial waste, creating added value for cassava residue.

The commercialization of this innovation is led by Hide & Seek Innovation Co., Ltd., which markets the product under the brand “Hide & Seek.” The product stands out for its sustainability, contributing to a circular economy by repurposing waste while supporting local industries.

The initiative delivers numerous social and economic benefits. It generates income for local farmers and businesses, reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 80-100 tons per kilogram of protein, and creates approximately 700-800 jobs. This project highlights the potential of cassava residue as a resource to promote sustainable economic growth and environmental preservation.
